In a certain regiment, the fourth company was evaluated as an excellent company for two consecutive years by the superiors. One day, a new soldier named Qu Xiaolong was transferred from the recruit company. He was afraid of hardship and fatigue, loved vanity, and lacked solid military skills. Which squad should he be assigned to? The company commander thought that the second squad leader, Jin Dahong, had a serious mindset of "maintaining excellence" and was always afraid the company would lose the red flag, having an incorrect view of honor, and was also resistant to Qu Xiaolong's arrival. Class leader Niu Fushan was impatient, with a simple and rough work method. Therefore, the company commander decided to assign Qu Xiaolong to the second squad's fifth class, intending to guide Xiaolong while also using this opportunity to provide ideological education to Jin Dahong and Niu Fushan. During an emergency assembly, Xiaolong lagged behind, affecting the fourth company's final arrival. As a result, the "mobile red flag" was seized by other companies. On the way back, company commander Lin Zhiyong added a mountain climbing exercise, and Xiaolong complained a lot. After returning to the camp, he put up a big character poster criticizing the company commander, saying he was "a remnant of warlords, simple and rough." Seeing this, Niu Fushan was so angry that he tore down the poster. The company commander felt it was inappropriate to simply tear down a big character poster and asked Niu Fushan to reflect. Although Jin Dahong disagreed with tearing down the poster, he also had objections to the company commander's addition of exercises. One problem arose after another. One Sunday, Niu Fushan went to help Qu Xiaolong, but they clashed and ended up arguing again, with Niu stepping on Xiaolong's flute. The company commander bought a new flute and had Niu Fushan give it to Xiaolong as compensation, apologizing to him. To facilitate good ideological work for both Xiaolong and Niu Fushan and strengthen their unity, the company commander gathered them to form a small band. However, they couldn't get along and ended up parting ways unhappily.
Where was the problem? Xiaolong came from a poor background, so why was he afraid of hardship and fatigue, free and easy, and in low spirits? To understand the situation, the company commander moved in with the fifth class. One time, the company commander accidentally saw a food bag by Xiaolong's pillow with the words "Determined to Revolutionize to the End" written on it. This was precisely the company commander's food bag; how did it end up with Xiaolong? It turned out that over a decade ago, when Guangzhou was liberated, a group of bandits committed violence and robbery at Xiaolong's home, and one of the bandits raised his bayonet to stab Xiaolong. In that instant, a gunshot rang out, and the bandit fell. Immediately, Lin Zhiyong engaged in a fight with the bandits. He killed several enemies but was heavily wounded himself. When Lin was taken away, he left the food bag to Xiaolong’s impoverished family. Later, when Xiaolong enlisted, his mother told him to keep the food bag with him and to never forget the kindness of the Communist Party, to be determined to revolutionize to the end. At this point, Company Commander Lin Zhiyong realized that Qu Xiaolong was the child he had saved back then. However, Lin did not tell Xiaolong that he had saved him; instead, he inspired and educated him using the bloody history before liberation. Soon, Xiaolong's sister, Xiaozhu, came to the company with an art troupe to perform. At the suggestion of the company instructor, to help Xiaolong and educate all the soldiers in the company, Xiaozhu prepared a song based on the story of the food bag to sing to the whole company. After hearing it, Xiaolong felt immense regret and felt guilty towards the People's Liberation Army that had saved him. From then on, with the help of the company commander’s teaching and example, Xiaolong's awareness improved, and he proactively wrote a big character poster for self-criticism.
