During World War II, the Japanese army occupied a prisoner of war camp on the border of Myanmar. Due to strategic needs, the Japanese planned to build a large bridge at the border between Myanmar and Thailand, hoping that the prisoners in the camp would assist in the construction. However, Colonel Nicholson, the British prisoner representative (played by Alec Guinness), believed this violated the Geneva Convention and refused to comply. As a result, Nicholson and others were placed in confinement, but without Nicholson's leadership, the prisoners became apathetic, and due to shortcomings in the Japanese design, the bridge construction stalled. The Japanese had no choice but to release Nicholson and others. After being freed, Nicholson felt that instead of destroying everything in war, he should create something, so he began to engage in the bridge construction work. Meanwhile, an escaped American POW, Shears (played by William Holden), accepted a special mission from the Allies to destroy the bridge on the day it was completed.
