The film depicts the tragic scenes of Eastern Europe during World War II from the perspective of a young boy. His parents send him to the countryside for refuge, but lose contact with him. The boy begins to wander between various villages. Due to his black hair and black eyes, the villagers believe he is a Gypsy who will bring misfortune to the village, and they torment him in various ways. He was once buried in the ground with only his head exposed, and crows pecked at him until he was covered in wounds. He witnesses people devouring each other in a solid chain of violence, depravity, and ignorance. As he lies on the railroad tracks and lets a train whistle past him, he experiences a joy of enduring humiliation yet still surviving. The film presents a stunning visual texture in black-and-white light and shadow, unfolding a war chronicle from a magical perspective.
