In 1992, years of tribal warfare left the East African country of Somalia ravaged, with its people suffering greatly, leading to a devastating famine that claimed the lives of 300,000. The dictator controlling the capital Mogadishu, Mohamed Farah Aidid, seized relief supplies from international organizations, provoking outrage worldwide. The deranged Aidid declared war on international peacekeeping forces, prompting the U.S. to send 160 special forces members to Mogadishu to overthrow his regime. These passionate soldiers were full of confidence, but due to insufficient intelligence, the conflict became a stalemate. During an operation to capture two high-ranking officials of Aidid’s regime, the special forces faced fierce resistance from Somali militia.
