The British Navy's HMS Devonshire was sunk in Chinese territorial waters by an unknown torpedo attack. To investigate the situation, the British Navy decided to use force and dispatched warships to retaliate in the affected area. However, this was halted by the head of secret intelligence, M (Judi Dench), who sent agent 007, James Bond (Pierce Brosnan), to uncover the true cause and prevent an imminent war between the two countries. As the investigation deepens, media mogul Carver (Jonathan Pryce) comes into Bond's view. At a dinner hosted by Carver, Bond encounters his former girlfriend Paris (Teri Hatcher), now Mrs. Carver. With Paris's help, Bond uses GPS to divert the dispatched British warships, gaining valuable time for his investigation. From equipment stolen from Carver, Bond discovers the exact location of the sunken warship, but he and Chinese female agent Lin Xiu (Michelle Yeoh) are captured by Carver at the wreck. It turns out that Carver intends to create a war to gain a monopoly on global media. Can Bond escape and thwart Carver's plans?
