In 1940, Kobe, Japan, with the clouds of war looming, the Pacific War is on the brink of eruption. However, Tomoko Fukuhara (played by Yu Aoi), who lives a life of luxury and comfort, seems unaffected by the outside world. She and her businessman husband, Yusaku Fukuhara (played by Issei Takahashi), lead a wealthy, Western-style life, with Tomoko playing the lead role in Yusaku's directed films during her leisure time, living a carefree life that is envied by many. However, everything seems to change after her husband and nephew, Fumio, return from filming a movie in the puppet state of Manchukuo. Yusaku becomes taciturn and deep in thought. Tomoko's childhood friend—now in military uniform, Taichi (played by Masahiro Higashide)—is grim, composed, and aggressive. Hidden secrets are gradually uncovered, and Tomoko is shocked to discover that Yusaku filmed something horrifying in Manchukuo, while Yusaku seems to be making a decision that threatens all of Japan. What should this innocent woman do… This film was originally a series produced by NHK, and the re-edited movie version won the Silver Lion for Best Director at the 2020 Venice Film Festival.
