Ip Man (played by Tony Leung), a native of Foshan, Guangdong, comes from a wealthy family in his youth and learns Wing Chun from the second-generation master Chen Hua-shun. His master’s advice of “one belt, one breath” supports him through the chaos of warfare and changing dynasties. His wife, Zhang Yongcheng (played by Song Hye-kyo), is strong-willed and capable, and the couple complements each other in harmony. In 1936, the martial arts world in Foshan is tumultuous. The aging master of Bagua Zhang, Gong Yutian (played by Wang Qiangxiang), promises to retire. His position as the president of the Chinese Martial Artists Association naturally attracts the attention and envy of martial arts experts.
