In the dark of night, he (Ryan Gosling) assists gangsters in robberies as a getaway driver. By day, he works at his friend Shannon's (Bryan Cranston) garage doing movie stunt driving. During a trip to the supermarket, he encounters Irene (Carey Mulligan) and her son, and they feel an instant attraction, spending a pleasant weekend together. However, Irene's husband Standard is released from prison, cutting off their budding relationship, leaving them with a sense of helplessness despite their feelings. Shannon introduces him to mob bosses Bernie and Nino. Meanwhile, he inadvertently discovers Standard getting beaten up, learning that the latter owes protection money from his time in prison. To pay off the loan shark and ensure the safety of Irene and her son, Standard decides to take another risky chance. To help Irene, he agrees to assist Standard with a heist. However, during the bank robbery, Standard is accidentally shot and killed by the owner, and he and his female accomplice Blanche get caught in a web of double-crossing… Nicholas Winding Refn, a Danish director, won the Best Director award at the 64th Cannes Film Festival for this film.
