The story takes place in the 17th century, in the Caribbean Sea, where pirates were said to be most active. The charming and witty Jack Sparrow (played by Johnny Depp) is a pirate active in the Caribbean, owning his own pirate ship, the "Black Pearl." For him, the most pleasurable life is to sail the "Black Pearl" around the Caribbean, freely plundering passing ships. Unfortunately, his nemesis, the cunning Captain Barbossa (played by Geoffrey Rush), steals his "Black Pearl." Barbossa is a villain with no moral boundaries; after robbing Jack's "Black Pearl," he becomes even more rampant, dominating the Caribbean Sea and establishing himself as the ruler of the entire Caribbean. One day, Barbossa's crew attacks the town of Port Royal, kidnapping Governor Swann's daughter, Elizabeth Swann (played by Keira Knightley), and her childhood friend, blacksmith apprentice Will Turner (played by Orlando Bloom). They manage to free Captain Jack from prison and steal the fastest Royal Navy ship, the "Interceptor," to quickly pursue the "Black Pearl." During their fight, Will and Jack discover that Barbossa and his pirates are cursed. On every moonlit night, they turn into undead skeletons, and Elizabeth holds the key to breaking the curse.
