"The Cassandra Crossing" is a film co-produced by the UK, Italy, and West Germany, and its filming techniques and content have become a classic model for subsequent disaster movies. Terrorists storm the headquarters of the World Health Organization in Geneva with plans for a terrorist attack, but they are confronted by security personnel. During the chase, a police officer accidentally shatters a test specimen of plague bacteria, splashing it onto one of the criminals. One criminal instantly becomes infected and dies of decay, while another escapes onto a train bound for Stockholm. The virus spreads rapidly, infecting many people on the train. The international police work to contain this plague bacteria, preventing the train from stopping at any stations and intending to take it to the Cassandra Crossing to be destroyed. Female writer Jennifer (played by Sophia Loren) and her husband, Dr. Chamberlain (played by Richard Harris), also get caught up in the situation. The doctor uses experimental methods to help many people recover from the bacteria but is not believed by his superiors, who insist on solving the issue in their own way. A conflict arises between the train's passengers and the chemical defense forces, leading people to take up arms. The fate of the many is headed towards the unknown alongside the train...
