Master thief Nick (Robert De Niro) successfully completes a job for his client and returns home, but during the handover, client Max (Marlon Brando) brings him two pieces of news: the bad news is that the buyer is dead, and Nick can't deliver; the good news is that there's a $4 million job waiting for him—he needs to steal the King's scepter from the basement of the Customs building. Planning to marry his girlfriend, Nick doesn't want to get back into stealing, but Max's associate, Jack (Edward Norton), who has posed as a mentally challenged person to infiltrate Customs, is persistent about the job. Jack finally convinces Nick to team up for the heist of the scepter. Jack uses his quick thinking to make the preparations, and although Nick is strict with the talented young man, he can't help but feel a degree of admiration. On the night of the heist, the two sneak into Customs, but things take an unexpected turn...
