The story takes place on a cruise ship headed to Boston. Along the way, the cruise ship encounters a violent storm, ultimately leading to it dropping anchor. The ship develops cracks, and a significant amount of seawater begins to seep into the hull. If not controlled, there is a risk that the entire cruise ship will sink. Ray (played by Casey Affleck) is the highest-ranking crew member on board, which means he has an undeniable responsibility for the lives of the 30 crew members. Experienced Ray decides not to sit idly by, but rather to lead the crew in a self-rescue operation. Meanwhile, the Massachusetts Coast Guard receives a distress signal from the cruise ship and dispatches a rescue team. Bernie (played by Chris Pine) is the captain of the rescue team. Under his leadership, four crew members drive a very rudimentary wooden lifeboat into the vast ocean.
