Around the year 1000 AD, tribal leader Bard (played by Alexanda Morton) is determined to make life difficult for the one-eyed warrior Harold (played by Mads Mikkelsen), whose origins are mysterious. Instead of offering protection as a fellow tribesman, Bard perceives Harold as a dangerous creature cursed by hatred and hastily sentences him to imprisonment. Harold is bound and tortured in the wilderness. Fortunately, he meets a clever 10-year-old boy named Al (played by Maarten Stevenson). With Al's help, Harold escapes from captivity. The two form a life-and-death alliance and embark on a journey toward the heart of darkness. Along the way, they board a pirate ship seeking a promised land, but are met with thick fog. After drifting at sea for 40 days, they finally reach an unknown land. However, when Harold and the others land, they fall into a trap set by the natives, and the pirates are met with a terrible curse, suffering heavy casualties. Young Al is also captured. While trying to rescue his benefactor, Harold gradually uncovers the mystery of his own origins...
