The failed scholar Wang Sheng (played by Zheng Shaoqiu) has been married for many years without any children. One day, while hurrying home from the city, he encounters a beautiful young woman, You Feng (played by Wang Zuxian). Feng, claiming to have a pitiful background, says she was forced to marry as a concubine to a prominent family and is tortured by the main wife, so she risked her life to flee. Wang gallantly helps her and offers her a temporary place to stay in his study.
