During the Gulf War, tank commander Captain Salvatore "Sal" D'Onofrio (Denzel Washington) makes a grave error in judgment and orders the destruction of his own tanks, resulting in the accidental death of his friend, Baldwin. Although a military court finds him not responsible, he is haunted by his conscience day and night, constantly seeking the courage to explain the incident to Baldwin's parents, but he never finds the strength. To honor Sal, his superior assigns him to investigate an incident involving a mechanic who heroically sacrificed herself to save soldiers during the war. Sal discovers that the brave mechanic who died heroically while saving soldiers is actually Karen (Meg Ryan), a woman! However, several soldiers' testimonies at the scene contradict each other and are full of holes. After Sal presses one of the soldiers, Murphy, for answers, Murphy unexpectedly commits suicide. With Murphy's suicide, the truth of the incident slowly comes to light...
