The powerful demon-slaying sword is about to reappear in the world. Ta Yi Zhen Ren observes the celestial phenomena and senses that chaos is imminent, so he sends his disciple Ruo Chen to the human realm to guard the sword and find a new master for it. In the secluded He Yang Village, where peaceful villagers live, a sudden massacre turns the village into a sea of blood. Zhong Kui, who grew up in He Yang Village, avoids this disaster by going to the capital for the imperial exam. Upon his return, he finds that his lover, Qian Qian, has mysteriously disappeared, which resolves him to find her and avenge everyone.
