People living at the bottom of society in the metropolis endure meager wages, working hard to sell their labor just to make ends meet. Some don't even have a place to sleep, and Steve is a stark example of this. After being released from prison, he traveled from Glasgow in the north to London in search of work, ultimately landing a temporary job at a construction site. Rab is a domineering guy, and the workers must obey him. Steve feels that making a living in London is very difficult. One day, on his way to work, he finds a handbag and meets Susan, who dreams of becoming a singer, but in reality, she is an unemployed failure struggling with addiction.
