Hubert is a teenage boy whose father is deemed a traitor for refusing to return to the country after being stranded in the West. For his sake, his mother painfully sends him to live with his aunt in Warsaw. During the era of oppressive communist rule in Poland, this noble, enigmatic, yet rebellious aunt runs an equestrian club. She forbids the boy from calling her aunt and even fabricates a politically correct background for him to facilitate his enrollment in school. Growing up under his mother's strict teachings of integrity and honesty, Hubert discovers a different world through his aunt. The boy transitions from doubt to gradually uncovering his aunt's secrets, ultimately understanding some facts he had previously found unimaginable, thereby changing his perception of truth. "Running Through the Years" (Cwal/ At Full Gallop, 1996) is another noteworthy work by Zanussi. Perhaps due to the political climate shift or the creator's own aging, this reflection on the oppressive communist rule in Poland during the 1950s does not come across as the serious affair one might expect. Instead, it reveals warm and childish emotions. Zanussi even makes a personal appearance at the end of the film, humorously acknowledging that some scenes are drawn from his own experiences, and he shares the stage with the actors for a curtain call.
