The evil professor Jacob ten Brinken (played by Eric von Stroheim) creates a morally void and inherently promiscuous artificial beauty Alraune (played by Hildegard Knef) by combining the genes of a prostitute and a murderer. One night, the professor's nephew Frank Braun (played by Karlheinz Böhm) encounters Alraune, and the two fall in love at first sight, preparing to elope. To stop them, Professor ten Brinken reveals the nature of the artificial being experiment to Frank, who, frightened, travels to Paris alone. After losing Frank, Alraune's behavior becomes increasingly frivolous and evil; she schemes against her rival and governess while manipulating four men: Frank's two friends Wolfie and Gerold, her servant Mathieu, and the professor's employee Dr. Mohn. Just as she sends one after another to their deaths and destruction, Frank suddenly returns.
