The story takes place on the eve of the end of the communist regime in Poland in the late 1980s, with the protagonist being a middle-aged film censor named Janusz. However, one day everything changed... In a neighboring cinema called "Freedom," a film titled "Sunrise" is being screened, when suddenly, the characters on the screen begin to revolt, entirely ignoring the script that had been previously approved, instead performing freely according to their own ideas. This causes a stir; the audience has never seen such a bizarre occurrence, as a perfectly normal heartwarming film transforms into a comedy that satirizes political reality. But they quickly realize that the characters are voicing the suppressed thoughts they have dared not express for so long, leading people to cheer, and more and more individuals from all directions flock to the Freedom Cinema to watch this magical film every day. Janusz attempts to control the chaotic situation, but after communicating with the characters, he understands that these fictional roles also possess thoughts of their own. However, high-ranking officials sent by the government have taken over the matter, and a fellow film critic suddenly recalls that this is very similar to a plot in "The Purple Rose of Cairo." Everyone gathers to watch Woody Allen's film in hopes of finding a solution, only to be caught off guard by even stranger events about to unfold.
