The film focuses on Ball and Arnaz, who in real life are a married couple and play a couple in the classic sitcom "I Love Lucy." The "Ricardo" in the title refers to their characters' last name in the show. The story is set during a working week of filming "I Love Lucy," from the script read-through on Monday to the audience filming on Friday. During this time, the couple faces a significant crisis, with their careers possibly ending and their marriage at stake. Historically, it was Ball who requested that her husband, Arnaz, also appear in the show (this series is adapted from Ball's popular radio program). CBS was initially reluctant, fearing that audiences wouldn't like a very "American" female lead being paired with a Cuban man.
