After the Anglo-French Allied Forces burned down the Old Summer Palace, they forced the weak and foolish Qing government to sign a series of unequal treaties, leading to their rampant arrogance in China. The timid and fearful Emperor Xianfeng (played by Tony Leung) hid in the Hot River Palace. Beside him, apart from the Empress (played by Chen Ye), the concubines often seen around Xianfeng included Consort Li (played by Zhou Jie) and the Empress Dowager Yi (played by Liu Xiaoqing). The Empress Dowager Yi tried hard to please Xianfeng, but Consort Li was clearly favored more by him. On his thirtieth birthday, Xianfeng suddenly fell seriously ill. In his final moments, the ambitious minister Suqing (played by Xiang Kun), seeing the cunning nature of the Empress Dowager Yi, privately suggested to eliminate her and establish a young ruler. Initially, Xianfeng thought it made sense, but upon realizing Suqing's nefarious intentions, he instructed him and seven other ministers to serve as regents for the young ruler and granted the "Tongdao Hall" seal to the Empress Dowager Yi, urging her to work together with the Empress to nurture the young ruler. During the time of Xianfeng's great mourning, Suqing conferred the titles of Cian and Cixi upon the Empress and the Empress Dowager Yi in a bid to deceive them into seizing power, but he ultimately failed against Cixi. After dealing with Suqing, Cixi did not spare Cian either.
