Northern Shaolin monk Zhi Ming (played by Jet Li) practices diligently every day to avenge his parents' deaths. He is naturally pure-hearted and clever, earning the deep trust of his master. One day, a group of mischievous "disciples" he has taken in inform him that Prince Hesso, who has been in seclusion for many years, has re-emerged to take power. Upon hearing the news of his father's murderer, Zhi Ming is filled with rage and immediately descends the mountain to attend Hesso’s birthday celebration and look for an opportunity to assassinate him. Meanwhile, the Southern Shaolin lay disciple Sima Yan (played by Huang Qiu Yan), who shares a deep-seated grudge against Hesso, also heads north to kill him. The Southern Shaolin sends another lay disciple, Zhao Wei (played by Hu Jianqiang), to secretly support and protect Sima Yan. During Hesso's birthday celebration, Zhi Ming, Sima Yan, and Zhao Wei join forces for the assassination, but their efforts ultimately fail. The three escape through heavy encirclement, and along the way, Zhi Ming discovers that Sima Yan is actually his betrothed whom he was promised to as a child. Being a monk, Zhi Ming cannot marry Sima Yan, and the three plan to attempt the assassination of Hesso again…
