Director Hu Jinquan won an award at the Cannes Film Festival and was selected as one of the world's top five directors by the British "International Film Guide" in 1978. This anti-Japanese war film is Hu's first work he wrote, directed, and starred in, released in 1966. It won Best Screenplay, Best Editing (by Jiang Xinglong), and the Special Award for Promoting National Spirit at the Golden Horse Awards, and was praised for "depicting the patriotic fervor of the Chinese people, with lively direction and deep content." The story portrays the efforts of the Chinese people to resist Japan during World War II; besides Hu's appearance, the main cast also includes Rita Chao, Chen Hou, Xia Yiqiu, and Chen Yanyan.
