To write, philosophy teacher Marion (Gena Rowlands) rents a studio. One day, while working intently, Marion hears voices coming from the ventilation shaft; it turns out that there is a psychology clinic next door. By an odd twist of fate, Marion begins to eavesdrop on a patient's confessions to her doctor. The patient, a woman named Hope (Mia Farrow), shares her struggles, plunging Marion into deep reflection. In the eyes of others, Marion is a successful woman with a prosperous career and a happy marriage, but the emotions and thoughts she bears in her heart are known only to her. Hope's painful confessions ignite Marion's desire to examine her own life, and a reunion with an old friend makes her increasingly aware that her seemingly abundant life has many cracks. Should she continue down the wrong path or start anew? Standing at the crossroads of life at fifty, confused Marion does not know how to choose.
