Wei Jie is an obscure poet whose collection of poems is not only rejected by publishers but also discarded like garbage. His brother even sells his works as waste paper for money. Refusing to be looked down upon any longer, he chooses to live on the streets, where he meets Gu Labao, a prostitute who appreciates his work. An accident leads everyone to believe he is dead... Time Magazine selected it as one of the top 100 movies in the world, marking it as a significant representative work of Dutt's turning point. The prostitute tempts the down-and-out poet onto her desire ship, only to discover his talent, resulting in mutual appreciation. The poet is erroneously reported dead, and his works suddenly gain immense popularity, causing relatives and friends to distance themselves. Dutt portrays the chaos of a decadent era with great impact, and although the themes are unconventional (with bold close-ups used innovatively), it resonates with contemporary issues and has become very popular. Dutt moves away from commercial comedy and masters an artistic path. The poet encounters an old lover in an elevator, leading to a musical sequence that spans three timelines, a classic moment in Indian cinema.
