Young Catherine (Gwyneth Paltrow) is experiencing a trial in her life; she has to work while taking care of her ailing father, Robert (Anthony Hopkins). Although Robert is a renowned mathematician, he is unable to care for himself well due to illness in his later years. Robert eventually passes away, leaving Catherine devastated and reclusive. Meanwhile, Robert's student Hal (Jake Gyllenhaal) intends to search for the mathematical notes left by his teacher, which infuriates Catherine. Sister Claire (Hope Davis) hopes that her sister Catherine will sell their father's house and move to New York with her. She believes that Catherine might have inherited some of their father's ailments and wants to take care of her. Catherine has no intention of leaving, and her relationship with Hal becomes complicated. Hal opens Robert's drawer with the key Catherine gave him, revealing a mathematical manuscript that excites him. He proposes to publish the material under Robert's name, but who the actual author is surprises both Hal and Claire.
