The story takes place in the late 1920s. Huang Yinggu (played by Zhang Jinling) escaped from the jaws of death when her wealthy parents were forced to their demise by local tyrants. Refusing to be a "daughter-in-law waiting for a husband" in the rich man's household, Huang fled and immersed herself in the teachings of an old man in the martial arts world, mastering various skills over the years. After her master passed away, Huang Yinggu led her fellow disciples to rob the rich and help the poor, becoming a formidable hero in the green forest. Later, she was incorporated into the Red Army, where she served as the commander of a workers' and peasants' Red Army unit, with senior revolutionary Liu Qinglin (played by Li Chengbin) assigned as the party representative in her team, thus embarking on the revolutionary path. After the troops underwent reorganization, they were ordered to advance into the Honghu area of Hubei to engage the enemy. The deputy commander, Geng Tiesuo (played by Wu Lusheng), could not tolerate the harsh life and disciplinary constraints of the Red Army and was incited by traitor Gen Sheng (played by Miao Zhuang) to stir up troubles in the unit, plotting to defect.
