In a coastal town, a girl named Juliette (Brigitte Bardot) adopted by an elderly couple faces criticism from the residents due to her beauty and reckless behavior, but she seems completely unfazed and continues a relationship with the wealthy businessman Carradine, who is old enough to be her father. Carradine loves Juliette but also imposes limits on his actions. Juliette befriends the eldest brother, Antoine, among the Tardieu brothers, but chooses to give up after discovering his true nature. The guardians can no longer tolerate Juliette's wild behavior and notify the orphanage to take her back. To keep Juliette in the town, Antoine's brother, Michel (Jean-Louis Trintignant), proposes to her. This seemingly unpromising marriage brings a lazy, peaceful happiness to both of them. Soon, Antoine returns to the town to manage the shipyard, and the atmosphere in the Tardieu family becomes delicate. As Juliette has an accident at sea, this pair of brothers and Carradine get embroiled in a tumultuous situation.
