Choi Baeda (played by Yang Dong-gun) wants to be a disciple of the famous martial arts master Su Fan (played by Jung Do-hong), but Su Fan has long concealed his identity and retreated to the mountains, leaving Choi Baeda no choice but to give up. Choi Baeda travels to Japan, becomes a young airman, and befriends a man named Chun (played by Jung Tae-woo), forming a strong friendship. In an accident, Choi Baeda saves a girl named Yoko (played by Hirasawa Aya) from the hands of the US military, and the two fall in love. Later, Choi Baeda unexpectedly encounters Su Fan, who turns out to have been hiding in a circus all along. Choi Baeda reignites his desire to become his disciple, but is rejected by Su Fan, who leaves him a copy of "The Book of Five Rings" for self-study. Subsequently, Choi Baeda, through his own effort and intelligence, immerses himself in the text and, upon returning after his training, defeats martial arts masters from Kyoto, Sapporo, and Nara, inciting strong discontent in the Japanese martial arts community.
