Xin Baihua (played by Yuan Muzhi) and Liang Zhifu (played by Gu Menghe) are childhood friends. After the September 18 Incident, they escaped from their hometown in Northeast China to Shanghai. On the second floor of their rented apartment live a young girl A Feng (played by Wang Renmei) and her mother, who lead a hard life relying on each other. Baihua feels great sympathy for A Feng's situation and often helps the mother and daughter both openly and secretly. Baihua encounters the wealthy merchant's widow, Mrs. Shi (played by Tan Ying), and they fall in love. Meanwhile, Liang Zhifu gets arrested for participating in revolutionary activities. Baihua sends A Feng to school for further studies, and A Feng joins a singing and dancing troupe, starting to perform some revolutionary plays. After watching A Feng perform in "The Songstress Under the Iron Hoof," Baihua’s heart is deeply moved, yet he still cannot let go of his feelings for Mrs. Shi.
