Venezuelan actor Edgar Ramirez plays the famous Panamanian boxer Roberto Durán in the film, while Robert De Niro portrays his trainer, the equally renowned Ray Arcel. In the 1970s, Durán was the most feared figure in the boxing world. His wild eyes, dark hair, and ferocious fighting style made him a terrifying opponent in lightweight matches. From 1972 to 1979, Durán was unstoppable in the boxing ring, winning championships in at least three different weight classes. He is the only boxer in the world to continue fighting across five different decades. Durán retired in 2002 at the age of 51. This film centers on Durán's legendary bout with another famous boxer, Sugar Ray Leonard. On November 25, 1980, the two fighters met for the second time in Louisiana, after Durán narrowly defeated Leonard seven months earlier in their first match, despite the close nature of the fight, as ringside judges unanimously declared Durán the winner. In the second confrontation, the outcome could have been very different, but in the eighth round, Durán told the referee to "stop," which allowed Leonard to win the match. From then on, Durán became the most disliked boxer in his home country and spent many years trying to rebuild his reputation.
