British journalist George Hogg (played by Jonathan Rhys Meyers) infiltrates Nanjing, intending to expose the atrocities committed by the Japanese army in the area. However, he is discovered by the Japanese military, and just as he is about to be executed, a Chinese guerrilla fighter, Chen Hansheng (played by Chow Yun-fat), rescues him. George also meets foreign battlefield doctor Li (played by Radha Mitchell). He eventually makes his way to Huangshi, where he lives with over 60 orphans. The children, who have suffered greatly from the war, are initially resistant to foreigners and show little respect. Yet, as time passes, George's enthusiasm and kindness touch the children, and within a few months, their lives and surroundings improve significantly, thanks in part to the help of kind-hearted Mrs. Wang (played by Michelle Yeoh). As life stabilizes, the war draws near. George, Hansheng, and Li decide to take the children to Sandan, a remote place. The hardships of the journey and the loss of companions cannot deter them. However, an illness eventually impacts the lives of George, Li, and the children...
