The film is adapted from the six-act play by the great Spanish poet Federico García Lorca, who was brutally killed by Franco's government for supporting the Republican government during the Civil War, and his works were banned during the rule of the rebels. The story unfolds in the form of a flamenco dance/documentary, narrating a bloody tragedy to the audience through the actors' preparations and rehearsals: on the wedding night, the groom's mother is troubled as she learns that the bride is the daughter of the enemy who killed her husband, leading to a sense of foreboding. The bride's cousin Leonardo (played by Antonio Gades) deeply loves his cousin, and amidst the chaos, he elopes with her. The groom, upon discovering this, pursues them with a knife, leading to a bloody duel between the two men... The Spanish director Carlos Saura is known for his flamenco film trilogy, the other two being "Carmen" and "The Magic of Love."
