"Before the Revolution," filmed in his hometown of Parma, marks Bernardo Bertolucci's first work to incorporate political consciousness beyond the exploration of humanity. The film portrays how a middle-class young intellectual hesitates between ideals and reality. He wants to discuss revolution and emotions, but when he falls in love with his aunt, he feels guilty and troubled about this feeling. Ultimately, he succumbs to reality and marries a girl he does not particularly like. Although the film is not an autobiography of Bertolucci, it vividly reflects the atmosphere of the 1960s, showcasing the young and passionate aspects of his character.
