In the winter of 1969, by the cold and slim Yellow River banks. Poor farmer Zhao Da, 30 years old and still unmarried, was entrusted by his dying mother to the clan elder Zhao Tiantang. A girl from the neighboring village, Gou Dan, had a romantic relationship with Zhao Da; she came from a poor background, and her mother was seriously ill with no money for treatment. Out of kindness, Zhao Da sold his sheep to support them. Unexpectedly, the commune’s armed minister Mi Laichang intervened violently and took Gou Dan away.
