The handsome young Michael (played by Walter Slezak) is the exclusive model for the painter Sulet. Using Michael as his muse, Sulet creates exquisite works of art that gain him immense fame, resulting in a constant stream of visitors seeking his paintings. However, Sulet refuses to sell his masterpieces in order to preserve his beautiful memories of Michael. A young and beautiful countess visits Sulet, requesting a portrait, and Michael silently watches her. As their eyes meet, feelings begin to develop. After consideration, Sulet decides to paint the countess, but his progress halts when he finds himself unable to capture her eyes. Michael takes up the brush, and the countess's beauty comes to life on the canvas... Michael and the countess fall in love and gradually drift away from Sulet, who endures the deception and betrayal of the young couple, expressing his inner sorrow in his paintings. The flame of his life, tortured by loneliness, slowly extinguishes... This film is adapted from Hermann Ungar's novel of the same name and is one of the earliest works in film history to address LGBTQ themes.
