Maria (Julie Andrews) is a young and lively nun who loves to sing loudly in nature, often forgetting the rules of the convent. The Mother Abbess believes that Maria does not belong in such a strictly governed convent. After discussing the matter with the other nuns, the Abbess decides to send Maria to be a governess for a man named Captain von Trapp (Christopher Plummer). The Captain's wife has been dead for many years, leaving him with seven children, and he insists on strict discipline for them. He tells Maria that no governess has lasted long in his household due to the children's mischief. Indeed, Maria faces mischief, but the kind-hearted teacher does not inform their father; instead, she cares for the children like a mother and quickly bonds with them. Gradually, under Maria's influence, the Captain changes his attitude towards the children. A romantic relationship develops between the Captain and Maria, and after they marry, they return to Austria, which has been occupied by the Nazis. The Captain does not want to work for the Nazis, and the family prepares to escape...
