The story takes place in May 1940 in Rotterdam, Netherlands. A young Dutch man, Vincent (played by Jan Smit), works as a waiter in a hotel with his brother, while also being an amateur boxer. One day in early May, Eva (Roos van Erkel), the daughter of a wealthy German businessman, arrives at the hotel to prepare for her wedding to German entrepreneur Dirk (Pieter Van der Sman). While delivering bread, Vincent has a chance encounter with Eva on the street, and while taking photos of her by the bridge, they unexpectedly run into Dutch soldiers ambushing invading Nazi soldiers. To escape danger, they hurriedly flee into the elephant house of a nearby zoo. During their time in the elephant house, Vincent and Eva quickly fall in love, and their feelings for each other deepen. However, this forbidden love arouses great hostility from Dirk towards Vincent. On May 14, Eva and Dirk plan to have their wedding at the church, but German aircraft begin a fierce bombing, turning the church and hotel into ruins. Vincent does everything he can to save Eva, but Dirk stands before them with a gun. A shot rings out, and Vincent is wounded in the shoulder; at this moment, Eva decisively rushes forward to grab the weapon, and just then, an unexpected explosion occurs.
