In the late 19th century, the infamous "Butch Cassidy" (played by Paul Newman) and his partner the Sundance Kid (played by Robert Redford) roam a small town in the American West, robbing banks, fighting fiercely with their enemies, and outsmarting the police. One day, they rob a “Flying A” company's mail car, attracting the attention of the sheriff and local residents. However, they continue to live carefree lives, enjoying happy times with schoolteacher Etta (played by Katharine Ross). After they rob the “Flying A” mail car again, a squad of mounted police pursues them relentlessly, launching a massive search operation that forces Butch and Sundance to flee. After jumping off a cliff to escape, they find Etta and discuss going to Bolivia for a living. In a foreign land, they attempt to go straight and leave their past behind, but ultimately feel that this life isn't for them, leading them to return to crime. In a fit of anger, Etta leaves them and returns to America. They inadvertently expose their identities in a small town and are surrounded by pursuing police. With obstacles in front and pursuers behind, can Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid survive the onslaught and rise from the ashes? The film won the Academy Awards for Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Original Song, and Best Score at the 42nd Oscars
