After her mother’s death, Kate (played by Helena Bonham Carter) is taken in by her aunt Maud (played by Charlotte Rampling). Maud hopes Kate can marry a wealthy man and live a life free from financial worries, but the headstrong Kate falls for the obscure journalist Morton (played by Linus Roache). A rich girl named Millie (played by Alison Elliott) appears in Kate’s life; she is seriously ill and has little time left. Innocent Millie falls in love with Morton, and Kate watches it all unfold. A cunning plan forms in her mind, where she could inherit Millie's fortune and win Morton’s love. She quickly becomes best friends with Millie, sharing everything. However, human emotions are not as easily manipulated as Kate believed, and as Morton and Millie’s relationship deepens, Kate finds herself in a state of profound anxiety.
