In 1909, a German explorer fell ill with a mysterious disease in the Amazon jungle and sought help from a shaman whose tribe had been almost completely slaughtered. They traveled up the river, trying to find lost tribe members and a mysterious plant that could cure him; in 1941, an American explorer also set foot in the rainforest, retracing the steps with a local elder, as the sleeping memories of the rainforest were gradually awakened, with the madness and disasters of the past growing like tropical plants, twisting into deeper scars... Based on the expedition diaries of real-life figures in the Amazon Basin, "The Embrace of the Serpent" is a black-and-white visual poem by young Colombian director Ciro Guerra dedicated to the South American continent. It won the Grand Prize at the Directors' Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival and represented Colombia in the race for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.
