At the age of ten, Mei (played by Ruan Ruqiong) was sent by her neighbors to work as a maid in a wealthy household in Saigon. Because she resembled the deceased daughter of the mistress, Mei was deeply loved by her. However, the mistress did not see any brightness in her life; her musician husband would occasionally leave without explanation for several days and later disappeared altogether.
