The talented and idealistic young man Max Fischer (Jason Schwartzman) studies at an elite preparatory school in Houston. Despite entering a prestigious institution, Max focuses all his energy on extracurricular activities. With his exceptional intelligence, he quickly becomes adept in various clubs. However, his neglect of academics soon leads to the threat of expulsion. By chance, he befriends the successful businessman Herman Bloom (Bill Murray), learning many life truths from their relationship. However, everything comes to a head with the talented and beautiful teacher Rosemary Cross (Olivia Williams), as Max finds himself deeply ensnared in the world of love. This film, with its sharp and witty dialogue along with the successful portrayal of characters by both new and veteran actors, was nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the 56th Golden Globe Awards and won several awards at the Independent Spirit Awards in 1999, including Best Director and Best Supporting Actor.
