Female student Valentin (played by Irène Jacob) is a part-time model with a boyfriend far away in England. Despite cherishing this relationship, she cannot stop her boyfriend's suspicions about her. The retired judge (played by Jean-Louis Trintignant) experienced a heart-wrenching love in his youth; the betrayal of a lover has made him distrust the world. His only pleasure is eavesdropping on his neighbors' phone calls, observing how relationships are filled with deception. After meeting Valentin, the emotions he had frozen for years begin to thaw. Law student Auguste (played by Jean-Pierre Lorit) has a bright future but must face the infidelity of his lover. He decides to go to England for a while to escape his painful feelings, and on the ferry, he meets Valentin, who is also going to England in search of her boyfriend. The ship encounters severe turbulent weather, and after the storm, television news broadcasts reports of the ship's distress. While over a hundred people perish, both Valentin and Auguste survive, feeling a strange sense of familiarity with each other...
