On a train to Moscow, military academy student Andrei Tolstoy (played by Oleg Menshikov) encounters the charming American woman Jane (played by Julia Ormond), and they develop feelings for each other. Jane falsely claims to be a widow visiting her mad engineer father (played by Richard Harris) in Russia, but in reality, she is a socialite sent to gain the trust of General Radlov (played by Aleksey Petrenko), the head of the military academy, so that the engineer's "Siberian barber" logging machine can smoothly enter West Berlin. Unexpectedly, the general develops genuine feelings for Jane and wishes to propose to her, while Andrei's feelings for Jane intensify. Jane, on one hand, wants to accept Andrei's feelings, but on the other hand, she needs to complete her mission, leading to an uncontrollable situation. During a performance, Andrei, out of jealousy and misunderstanding, injures the headmaster and is exiled to Siberia. At the train station, although Jane manages to catch the final farewell, Andrei never gets to see her one last time. Ten years later, Jane finally finds Andrei's address in Siberia, but ultimately cannot escape the changes of fate... Several years later, Jane returns to America and recounts this past in a letter to her son at the military academy.
