Henry (Edmund Gwenn) and his daughter Sylvia (Katharine Hepburn) live a life of mutual dependence. Driven by life's pressures, Henry embezzles funds and is unable to repay his debts. After being found out, he and his daughter go into hiding, adopting false identities for the escape. Along the way, to conceal her identity, Sylvia disguises herself as a man named Sylvester. During their flight, Henry and Sylvia meet a man named Jimmy (Cary Grant), who is also a con artist, and they quickly become companions on their journey. Later, Tilt (Natalie Paley) joins them. Interestingly, despite being together day and night, none of them can see through Sylvia's disguise until an artist named Michael (Brian Aherne) appears.
