The entire story of "Bluebeard's Eighth Wife" is a satire on the social customs of Puritan society: since the cleanliness movement in the film industry is in full swing, even couples who have officially registered their marriage are deprived of the right to share a bed, so it would be better to make a film about a wife unwilling to consummate the marriage, ensuring there is no risk of violating taboos. The wealthy male protagonist, who has a record of seven splendid marriages, finally overcomes all obstacles to win the woman of his dreams, but the suspicious eighth wife, although willing to marry, feels he will never believe that her motives for marrying into wealth are not financial, so she insists on remaining virtuous until he proves that he no longer doubts her sincerity, before she is willing to fulfill her duties as a wife in bed. The scene of dropping trousers and farting, if handled by another director, might end badly; however, under Liu Bieqian's direction, it becomes a dish rich in flavor and presentation— "superfluous" even turns into a mockery of the poor yet laughable male protagonist.
