In the 1950s, the social status of women in America seemed to have significantly improved. However, at prestigious women's colleges like Wellesley, teachers continued to focus on preparing students for good marriages rather than encouraging them to pursue knowledge that interested them, nor did they emphasize the development of their psychological resilience. When the beautiful and mature Katherine (played by Julia Roberts) graduated from college and arrived at the school to teach art history with ideals and passion, she encountered repeated setbacks in her attempts to instill seeds of freedom. However, due to her wit, candor, enthusiasm, and erudition, Katherine quickly won the affection of her students. Among them, Joan (played by Julia Stiles), who aspired to achieve a career like the boys, and the lively and energetic Betty (played by Maggie Gyllenhaal), slowly began to reveal their true selves. Yet, the news of another student, Betty (played by Kirsten Dunst), getting married shattered the atmosphere of freedom and romance.
