Professor Imaraas (played by Emil Jannings) teaches at a school known for its strict regulations, and he himself is likewise structured in his life. His greatest annoyance is the rebellious behavior of his students. By chance, Imaraas learns that a group of his students plans to attend a cabaret performance. Furious, he decides to go to the theater and catch these unruly kids in the act. What he does not expect is that this action will forever alter the course of his life. Laura (played by Marlene Dietrich) is the star of the theater, captivating nearly all men who are irresistibly drawn to her. Professor Imaraas is no exception; upon seeing Laura for the first time, he finds himself deeply infatuated. After much persistence, Laura eventually becomes Imaraas's bride, and the stark differences in their personalities and social standings set the tone for the tragedy that is to come.
